In April 2024, Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, set out for consultation its draft Media Literacy Strategy. The 2023 Online Safety Act clarified and added specificity to Ofcom’s media literacy responsibilities – including a requirement to set out a three year strategy by the end of 2024. The consultation, which is now closed, was an opportunity for stakeholders to provide their views on Ofcom’s evolving agenda and activities in this area.

MILA welcomed the opportunity of responding to the consultation and our comprehensive response is available through the link below. We  listed out thoughts and comments in the hope that they will be helpful to the elaboration of the strategy. We did not address every point in the strategy, but have provided our thoughts to the issues that are most pertinent to us. We do so in the expectation of continued, fruitful collaboration between ourselves and Ofcom – and we look forward to the publication of the final version of the strategy later this year.
