MILA has responded to the call for evidence for the UK Government’s Curriculum and Assessment Review relating to schools in England. Follow the link below to read the pdf version of our response.
MILA submission to curriculum review
The review, initiated in July 2024, is expected to produce its final recommendations in the autumn of 2025. The call for evidence is the first part of the review process, prior to the setting out of an interim report in early 2025, which will then itself be the subject of further consultation. The call provided an opportunity to make the case for greater recognition and a clearer place for media and information literacy education across all key stages of the school curriculum, for both primary and secondary schools.
In line with its collaborative ethos, MILA consulted with a range of key stakeholders in putting together its response. We are therefore very grateful for the advice and input from our colleagues at the Association for Citizenship Teaching, the Media Education Association, Parent Zone, Internet Matters, SP4IL, CILIP and the CILIP Information Literacy Group. Most of these organisations are making submissions of their own; MILA’s response seeks to complement the views of our partners and we have deliberately opted for a broad, overarching perspective rather than trying to present an in-depth analysis of different elements of the curriculum – we felt that this more exhaustive approach was best left to our partners.
We hope that our views, alongside those of our partners, will help the review understand the critical importance of media and information literacy education. As previously reported, there are early signs that the Government recognises this; let’s see if those aspirations can turn into reality.
